Syllabus Content


Core 1 Description

This module should occupy approximately 30% total course time.

This core examines the scientific foundations of human movement. Students explore how the body moves and why it moves in particular ways. Students focus on the relationships between anatomy, physiology, fitness, biomechanics and efficient human movement.
This forms the basis of more detailed study in the HSC core, Factors affecting performance.

Below is a range of examination style questions. The questions have been broken into 3 groups according to marks allocated to this style of question. Keep in mind when answering the questions, the marks allocated to each question determines the length of response. A helpful hint when answering questions is to refer back to the HSC- Key terms page to understand what the verb in the question is asking!!


3 marks


1. What is the range recommended for heart rate during exercise?


2. Outline the key points associated with the biomechanical principles influencing movement.


3. Describe the strategies that people se to hold a stable, balanced position. For example, how they hold a balance position during a
gymnastics routine.


4. Explain the difference between mass and weight.


5 marks


5. Identify the agonist and antagonist in the following actions: extension of the elbow- rotation of the shoulder- flexion of the hip- hyperextension
of the hip- rotation of the neck.


6. Describe the components of physical fitness. Outline ho each component may influence human movement.


7. Explain why people do not always float in a horizontal position, and what strategies can be used to make he body more horizontal.


12 mark questions


8. Identify the bones that form each of the following joints. Identify the movement the joint can perform and explain how the bones and joint
type influence those movements. Hip joint- shoulder joint- elbow joint- shoulder joint.


9. Explain the difference between aerobic and anaerobic training and outline the benefits athletes may get from each type of training. List
examples of activities that provide anaerobic exercise.


10. Using the FITT principle, design a one-week training program for a person in their late twenties, who has not done any exercise since
school.
